What's Happening

Volunteer Orientation Set for Sept 10 and 11

Radio 1190 will host our biannual Volunteer Orientations on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, September 10th and 11th, at 6:30 pm in Hale 230 on the CU campus. The meetings will last approximately one hour. Volunteers are the life's blood of Radio 1190, so this is your chance to get involved. There are lots of ways to do it, including promotions and street team, news and sports, production and engineering, as well as hosting your own show as a DJ. Questions, call 303-492-5031 or just bring them to the meeting. See you there.

Nat Wraps Up the Rude Awakening This Week

If you have been enjoying Nat's Rude Awakening weekday mornings on Radio 1190, be listening this week! After two plus fabulous years at the helm of the Radio 1190 morning show Nat is transcending. He isn't departing completely, you can still hear him on the late afternoon Thursday show this fall. But for this last week of the Rude Awakening, Nat will have many surprises, fresh takes on the DNC, and as usual, lots of great independent music. Tune in this week for the grand finale of the Rude Awakening!

CD of the Month

Radio 1190’s CD of the Month for August is Waiting in Vain, the solo debut from Wooden Wand’s singer James Jackson Toth. Coming from Tennessee, Toth was the leader of the Brooklyn group which featured a revolving cast of musicians and a sound that flowed from free jazz to psych to traditional folk. During their run Wooden Wand and its various incarnations released several eclectic albums and even more CD-Rs that were usually made in very limited quantities.

Radio 1190 Wins Westword's "Best Radio Station"

Westword just put out their 25th annual "Best of Denver" awards and gave us our tenth award in a row! Radio 1190 was named "Best Radio Station."

"Back in 1998, before it was subsumed by Clear Channel, Jacor wound up with one more station than it could keep under FCC rules. Instead of holding a fire sale, execs donated it to the University of Colorado at Boulder, which up until then had made do with a school radio station that broadcast to the dorms using carrier current. A decade later, Radio 1190 is a station worthy of celebrating, with a reach that goes far outside of CU and even Boulder. It's an oasis of exciting music, creative programming and community support in a desert of corporate mediocrity. Happy tenth, and may there be many more anniversaries to follow."

Featured Show:

Krewe de Louisianne

The Krewe de Louisianne brings a musical gumbo to the Radio 1190 airwaves and internet connections every Sunday afternoon from 2 – 4 p.m. {MDT}.  The Krewe focuses on artists from and tunes about Louisiana – songs that vary in their origins {New Orleans street corners, sugar cane fields, sawmill juke joints, and backwater bayous} as much as they vary in style {Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, funk, swamp pop, brass band, rock n roll, blues, and R&B}.

The show aims to provide healthy portions of both familiar songs and obscure recordings; each helping sprinkled and flavoured with a diverse selection of musical ingredients…..early 20th century jazz compositions {Jelly Roll Morton} can be followed by contemporary zydeco offerings {Geno Delafose & The French Rockin’ Boogie} which in turn might give way to 1950s R&B arrangements {Dave Bartholomew}, brass band second line tunes {Dirty Dozen Brass Band}, and sultry swamp blues {Papa Lighfoot}.  On occassion, the Krewe features recorded interviews with local and national touring musicians as well as live in-studio appearances.

The Krewe de Louisianne is always looking for new members to join the party; so be sure to tune in on Sunday afternoons for the ultimate Louisiana music mix tape!
